The Institute of Precambrian Geology and Geochronology Russian Academy of Sciences (IPGG RAS) was established by decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences on June 16th, 1967. The Institute of Precambrian Geology and Geochronology is a structural unit within the Earth Sciences Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences. IPGG is a nonprofit research organization - the Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

IPGG RAS provides scientific research in the following areas, which are approved by the Decree of Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences № 171 ( March 25th, 2008):

• Comprehensive study of the origin and chemical and isotopic evolution of the Earth’s primary matter, mantle and crust; developing a theoretical and methodological basis for the research of geospherical interaction on early Earth; the recognition and analysis of global thresholds in the lithosphere and mantle evolution in the Precambrian Era

• Geological exploration of the Precambrian regions and development of geodynamic models of the building and transformation of the Earth's crust; isotopic dating of geological processes, and their duration; improving the geochronological scale of the Precambrian Era

• Developing new approaches to the isotopic dating of rocks and minerals, study of fractionation in isotopes in natural processes

• Igneous and metamorphic petrology; parameters and mechanisms of endogenous processes in the building and transformation of the Precambrian lithosphere; physicochemical and thermodynamic modeling of petrogenetic processes, fluid flow and the role of mass transfer in the evolution of the mantle and crust

• Isotopic chemostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of sedimentary sequences; hypergenic, lithogenic and biogenic processes in the Precambrian era, reconstruction of the geochemical and isotopic evolution of the ancient exosphere and the conditions of archebiosis on Earth

• Studying Precambrian ore-formation processes, developing innovative methods of predicting the unique and strategically important Precambrian deposits.
